White House OMB Director has made a request to (R-La) House Speaker Mike Johnon for an extra
$87.6B in spending to fund the Iran war & other initiatives, including aid to US farmers & the Ebola response
In March, the Pentagon asked the White House to seek more than
$200B from Congress to fund the war in Iran, citing the need to support current & potential future military operations. Defense Sec said additional funding is necessary to sustain the campaign, while lawmakers were told that the conflict’s first 6 days alone cost at least
$11.3B, w/ total combat expenses likely higher
President Trump defended the proposed increase in the defense budget & stated that US ammunition stockpiles were depleted due to extensive aid to Ukraine, accusing former President Biden of providing
$350B in cash & military support without replenishing supplies. President Trump added that defense firms like
$LMT &
$RTX are "building at a level they’ve never seen before"
Note: House Appropriations leaders Tom Cole (R-OK) & Ken Calvert (R-CA) backed the White House’s request, saying the funding is needed to replenish weapons stockpiles, support deployed troops, strengthen US defenses, & maintain military readiness after recent operations against Iran. They emphasized Congress’s duty to ensure the military remains fully equipped to meet evolving national security threats & said lawmakers will review the proposal’s details
Fcat-Check: The Biden Admin committed
$188B in total to Ukraine (
$44.2B cash +
$66.5B hardware +
$50B domestic reinvestment) but federal spending relies on a multi-stage timeline & only
$83.4B has been fully disbursed in physical equipment & funds - the remaining billions are in long-term manufacturing contracts designed to build advanced weaponry thru 2026 & 2027
