Boom Supersonic disclosed a
$1.25 billion backlog for its “Superpower Turbine,” a power-generation version of its supersonic engine tech, along with
$300 million in new funding. The surge in electricity demand from AI data centers is opening unexpected opportunities for turbine makers. Boom says the turbine both supplies gigawatts of capacity for AI and supports development of its Overture jet engine.
Some analysts question the pivot, arguing AI companies could buy established industrial turbines instead. Still, the scramble for power has boosted interest in suppliers like GE Vernova, Cummins, Caterpillar, and even Kratos, though most of Kratos’ gains stem from drone demand. Whether major engine makers pursue similar AI-related business remains unclear, and long term, low-cost power solutions will likely prevail.
