Brazilian Equities are reflecting President Lula's speech last night calling the US tariff threat (Aug. 1st deadline per Trump) "unacceptable blackmail, which it is as you can see by the facts below...) $EWZ trading at 26.95 with @Morningstar ID NAV @ 26.99. $EWZS at 12.13 with ID NAV @ 12.18. That means it's just below its prior low on July 16th (12.23) with an investor emotional overreaction to the tariff news. Brazil does only 12% of its trade with the US and is running a nearly $7 B SURPLUS with the US and our POTUS is penalizing them over what is clearly politics (see prev. post). Brazilian trade organizations are suing in US Federal courts arguing that the move by Trump is politically motivated and violates WTO principles. I have stops in mind and will let you know if they go off. The above is an accurate narrative, but it's still a narrative, factual or not. See the pr. post on the Brazilian currency, as it appears to say to ignore the tariff fuss.

$EWZ $EWZS Here is Trump's NEC Director Kevin Hassett lying about the validity of the US tariffs on #Brazil at a ridiculous level of 50%. Brazil has a trade SURPLUS with the US, as I detailed here last week! LOL Look at Hassett squirm when asked repeatedly what Trump's reasoning is for tariffs, other than the fact that he doesn't like Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro being prosecuted for orchestrating a "Brazilian Jan6th." The guy is a bad liar. https://bsky.app/profile/carlquintanilla.bsky.social/post/3ltu6la2jtc2m

$EWZ $EWZS When a tariff decision appears almost if not entirely political, we need to go over the facts. #Brazil Trump's beef is about President Bolsonaro, the prior President of Brazil, who is facing charges for lying about the Brazilian voting system and staging a coup on Jan. 8, 2023. It's also claimed he plotted to poison the current president of Brazil, Lula, as well as assassinate the Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Sound familiar? ;) Bolsonaro is like Trump election denial on steroids in other words. It's so unfair to be prosecuted for attacking your own government and planning assassinations! Trump also complained about censorship of US tech social media companies, which is a NON-trade issue. The other BS is that Brazil is unfair to the US in trade. The truth is that the US has a $6-7 Billion trade SURPLUS with Brazil, not a deficit! At the current rate as of May the surplus this year will be $7.75 Billion. In other words, compared to many other countries and regions like the EU that has net of services trade with the US a $161 B deficit with the US and China's is $250 B per year at the current rate, Brazil could argue that IT should be the country penalizing US imports to Brazil! This means that the 50% tariff imposed by Trump is way out of proportion to reality. If there are particular product barriers in place in Brazil, those can be negotiated, but Trump's beef is almost entirely POLITICAL until proven otherwise. For these reasons, until I find other information that supports the charge of unfair trade practices, I'll be holding my modest Brazilian market exposure and see if the market wakes up to the truth. If not, there's always the exit...

Brazil Finance Minister Haddad says US tariff decision political, not economically rational; even the previous 10% tariff made no sense, as the US runs a trade surplus with Brazil. 50% tariff is unsustainable, does not think it will remain in place. Brazil's diplomacy is open to find a solution along with the US government. Will have to find a way to overcome tariff situation, have historically good relations with the US. $EWZ $EWZS $FLBR $ILF $BZF

$EWZ Now after a pullback the position is +1.1% from buys on 5-14- and 5-16 here. Adding $EWZS today as it's about flat with EWZ one of the strongest indexes globally. $EWZS @ 12.96 is at 55% vs the predicted short term trading Opportunity Rangeโ„ข for today. Midrange in an uptrend is a decent place to buy using my system. Recent average low has reached 37% in range, so I'll add more if it slips over the next few days.
