$TOELY $ASML $LRCX $AMAT Japan urged to strengthen chip curbs on China, Bloomberg reports In a letter, key U.S. lawmakers urged Japan to strengthen restrictions on sales of chipmaking equipment to China or risk facing U.S. curbs on Japanese companies, Bloomberg's Mackenzie Hawkins reported on Friday. The lawmakers dismissed arguments that restrictions have had a material negative impact on chip equipment companies like Tokyo Electron (TOELY), and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the U.S., Japan and the Netherlands in slowing China's chip ambitions. The letter cited increases in the stock prices of Tokyo Electron, ASML (ASML), Lam Research (LRCX), and Applied Materials (AMAT), as well as chip subsidy programs from the U.S. and EU, as evidence of the limited impact of export controls.

$TOELY Foreign funds sold equities while loading on USD/JPY short positions to decrease risk exposure, similar to how they unloaded USD/JPY long positions while selling equities in early August, which could be applied to the global market and can partially explain the recent volatility given the expected weakening of USD. A partial reason to the fall here. They have dominance in the coater/developer space and will be a very good investment long-term hold but the problem is the extent to the tariffs levied on semi suppliers as a whole. The insane q/q growth of semis and the recent guidances, with the backorders, could be partially explained by Chinese firms catching orders before harsher tariffs which will come after the election. The question is it is opportunity cost or a legitimate concern, and I lean towards the former but could see more suffering/flat short-term.

$KLAC was the only one of the five big semiconductor original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to end in the green today. The others ($ASML; $AMAT; $LRCX; $TOELY) all ended deep in the red. I'm not sure as to why, but I won't complain since I opened a position in KLAC yesterday after the slaughter.
