China’s Geely Automobile is preparing to enter the Canadian market after a policy shift earlier this year opened the door to Chinese electric vehicles. The company is currently awaiting certification from Canadian regulators for its Geely Auto brand, according to CEO Andy An of parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
Geely is also targeting expansion into Brazil, broader South America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, with plans to move beyond exports and eventually localize production in key markets.
The move follows efforts by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to attract Chinese EV investment and support domestic manufacturing. In January, Canada agreed to exempt up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs annually from a 100% tariff imposed in 2024.
Other Chinese automakers are also eyeing Canada.
