Ford Motor and China’s Geely have reportedly reached an agreement for Ford to sell part of its Almussafes manufacturing complex near Valencia, Spain, giving Geely a strategic production foothold inside the European Union. According to ABC, the transaction is expected to be officially announced on Thursday during a visit to the facility by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ford Europe President Jim Baumbick. The agreement would allow Geely to manufacture electric vehicles at the Spanish plant, beginning with its EX2 model. The move is significant for the Chinese automaker because it would provide local EU production capacity, helping it avoid tariffs imposed on electric vehicles imported from China while strengthening its position in one of the world's largest auto markets. $NIO $LI $GELYY $TSLA Tesla's retail sales in China were 25,956 units in April, down 9.66% from the same period last year and 53.74% from March. This caused the US EV maker to fall out of the top 10 list for NEV retail sales. Ranking 10th in NEV retail sales was Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), which captured a 3.5% share with 29,312 units. This sales volume represented a 22.6% year-on-year growth, despite a 17.2% drop from March. China’s Geely Automobile is preparing to enter the Canadian market after a policy shift earlier this year opened the door to Chinese electric vehicles. The company is currently awaiting certification from Canadian regulators for its Geely Auto brand, according to CEO Andy An of parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Geely is also targeting expansion into Brazil, broader South America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, with plans to move beyond exports and eventually localize production in key markets. The move follows efforts by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to attract Chinese EV investment and support domestic manufacturing. In January, Canada agreed to exempt up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs annually from a 100% tariff imposed in 2024. Other Chinese automakers are also eyeing Canada. $GELYY

Volkswagen regained the top spot in China’s passenger-car market during the first two months of 2026, overtaking BYD as government subsidies for greener vehicles declined, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Volkswagen’s joint ventures with FAW Group and SAIC Motor held a combined 13.9% market share in January–February sales. Geely followed closely with 13.8%, while Toyota Motor’s joint ventures with GAC Group and FAW captured 7.8%. BYD fell to fourth place with a 7.1% share, marking its largest sales drop since the pandemic after previously leading China’s market in 2024 and 2025. The shift comes as EV purchase-tax exemptions expire and Beijing reduces trade-in subsidies for electric vehicles, easing pressure on traditional automakers that had struggled against local EV makers.
