Furniture Stocks Fall on Threat of New Tariffs
Furniture stocks fell sharply after President Trump announced plans to impose new tariffs on imported furniture to encourage U.S. production. Companies heavily reliant on imports, such as Williams-Sonoma and RH, dropped 4.3% and 4.8%, respectively, while Arhaus fell 2.3%. Firms with higher U.S.-based production, including La-Z-Boy and Wayfair, were less affected, with smaller declines or stable shares.
Last week, the administration introduced a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, effective October 1. While details on implementation remain limited, companies that assemble products in the U.S. may receive exemptions. Investors remain cautious as policy details and potential impacts continue to unfold.
