The GEO Group and CoreCivic shares fell after a Bloomberg report said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to sharply scale back its use of privately operated detention centers. According to the report, ICE intends to reduce its network from more than 200 facilities to just 34 government-owned sites, with most detainees currently held in centers managed by GEO or CoreCivic. The shift would replace the existing patchwork of local jails and private prisons with a centralized system of larger facilities—primarily industrial warehouses—owned by the Department of Homeland Security. Local officials in Social Circle, Georgia, said they were briefed this week by a DHS delegation that the plan envisions 34 core facilities. A person familiar with the proposal confirmed ICE will rely mainly on government-owned sites going forward, though private companies may still provide services such as healthcare and security. $GEO $CXW

$GEO $CXW ICE plans to spend $38B making warehouses detention centers, WaPo says Immigration and Customs Enforcement expects to spend $38.3B to acquire warehouses and retrofit them into immigrant detention centers, Douglas MacMillan and Jonathan O'Connell of Washington Post report, citing documents ICE provided to New Hampshire's governor. ICE plans to buy and convert 16 buildings across the country to serve as regional processing centers, according to one of the documents, the Post reports. It is not clear which companies will be hired to renovate and operate the new facilities, adds the paper. CoreCivic (CXW) and GEO Group (GEO) have exposure to the immigration detention market.
