BoA: Aggregated credit & debit card spending per household rose +2.9% y/y in Feb (s/adj'd +0.4m/m) following the decline of -0.2% y/y in Jan From being a point of strength during 2023, it appears that lower- & middle-income households’ spending growth has been softening. Employment for those w/t a college education appears to have been slowing in recent months & turned negative in Jan. For those who are employed, however, BoA internal data continues to show steady growth in after-tax wages & salaries for both lower- &-middle income households. In Feb, all income cohorts saw a rise in y/y after-tax pay growth. Note: Highest earning 30% of households acct for more than half of overall US consumer spending Top 1% of income distribution show strong correlation b/n stock market performance & spending - likely due to holding more than a fifth of total household assets & a third of all equities & mutual fund shares $XRT $XLY $JETS $PEJ - $SPY #study
