UoM Consumer Sentiment: Apr 77.2 [down -2.8% m/m & +21.2% y/y] UoM Index of Consumer Expectations: April 76 [down -1.8% m/m & up +25.4% y/y] Republicans posted notable declines in sentiment this month, whereas Democrats and Independents did not. Sentiment for younger consumers rose, in contrast to middle-aged and older adults whose sentiment changed little or fell. Overall, consumers continue to express uncertainty about the future trajectory of the economy pending the outcomes of the upcoming election, but at this time there is no evidence that global geopolitical factors are on the forefront of consumers' minds. $XLY $XRT $XLP $XLF - $SPY

BoA: Total card spending per household rose +0.3% y/y in March, following the leap-year boosted +2.9% y/y increase in February While spending was soft on the month, the solid labor market continues to sustain consumer momentum. March saw strong jobs growth, and this appears to be reflected in strengthening after-tax wages and salaries growth in our data – with growth at the highest level since early 2023. Tax refunds may also provide additional support to households, with average refunds up by 5% this year through the end of March. While most consumers appear to be planning to save or pay down debt, there is a small rise in people saying they will go shopping. $XLY $XRT $XLP $PBJ - $SPY

Confidence in continued labor market strength alongside strong savings stocks among retirees are going to combine to underpin strong consumer spending for the foreseeable future. $XLY $XRT $XLF $SPY $AMZN

The Biden admin announces new student loan plan. The plans would give borrowers $20,000 in loan forgiveness for balances that have grown due to unpaid interest since entering repayment This would result in 25M Americans getting relief from balance growth that was garnered by unpaid interest, with 23M seeing their full balance growth canceled & estimated 2M would get full loan forgiveness through this option. This fall the Admin will begin canceling up to $20,000 in interest for millions of borrowers & full loan forgiveness for millions more - details have not been finalized Currently, about 43M Americans have some form of student loan debt. $XLF $XLY $XLP $XRT - $SPY
