$TAK $ALPMY $SMFG Takeda, Astellas Pharma and Sumitomo Mitsui to establish joint venture company Takeda (TAK), Astellas Pharma (ALPMY), and Sumitomo Mitsui (SMFG) announced that the three companies signed a master agreement on April 22 to establish a joint venture company. The new company will be dedicated to the incubation of early drug discovery programs, primarily originating from Japan and toward the creation of innovative therapeutics. $SMFG... RedBear: I don't think Buffets investment in Jefferies which is in a Japan joint venture with SMBC is really the reason the Japanese mega banks (SMFG, MUFG, MFG) have rocketed that past 14 months - the Jpn JV would basically just allow more access to the SMBC retail franchise for Jefferies and give SMBC more access to clients institutional in the US. The real reason for the rally is the move in Japanese interest rates and the move by the BOJ out of -VE rates.. Keep focused on the move in Jpn rates - could see a move in a few weeks at the next BOJ meeting.. If not March should happen with the new business year from April.

$JEF $SMFG Jefferies Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui expand strategic alliance to EMEA Jefferies Financial Group (JEF) and Sumitomo Mitsui (SMFG) announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to further expand their global strategic alliance to now include enhanced collaboration across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, or EMEA, on future corporate and investment banking business opportunities. In support of the initial strategic alliance in 2021, SMBC provided $2.25B in financing to Jefferies and purchased approximately 4.5% of the issued and outstanding common shares of Jefferies. In April 2023 the alliance was further bolstered by SMBC announcing its intention to raise its economic ownership to up to 15% on an as converted and fully diluted basis, which would result in SMBC becoming one of Jefferies' most significant shareholders.
