$SMFG Post the rate hike news the BoJ indicated a stronger willingness to continue raising rates to normalize monetary policy in Japan. The hawkish repricing has pushed the 2-year JGB yield up by around 9bps, reaching 0.47%. What this really means is BoJ Governor Ueda said that the current real policy rate remains "profoundly negative" and well below neutral levels, suggesting further room for rate adjustments. MUFG has just come out and now says they expect 2 more hikes this fiscal yr (ends April 25) which should continue to move MEGA banks higher... stay long!!

$SMFG The Bank of Japan ends a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday and could raise interest rates and taper its purchases of bonds, following its ending of negative interest rates in March. As it prepares to unwind a decade of monetary stimulus, investors who have witnessed the Nikkei stock index rally 20% in the past year are trying to pick winners Japan's three biggest banks forecast record profits in the coming year, thanks to better interest margins and growing funding demand, after being squeezed by negative rates for years. Shares of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group(SMFG), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group(MUFG) and Mizuho Financial Group(MFG) have surged 53%, 39% and 36% year-to-date, respectively. Overseas investors have also been buying more domestic-oriented sectors such as services and pharmaceuticals, on expectations of further gains in the yen.

$SMFG All eyes on what the BOJ does on July 31st... Having just ended negative rates in March, the BOJ still keeps short-term rates around zero. The next rate hike is expected to kick off a tightening cycle that will take rates to levels that neither cool nor stimulate growth - seen by analysts as somewhere around 0.5% to 1.5% - a process that could take several years. "For the BOJ, there is still a long way to go. ....

$SMFG To put into perspective - Last 6/30/23... Japanese 10yr bonds yields were .40bps they closed last night at 1.09%... nearly a 70bps increase - SMFG said it gains 40bl yen in NP for every 10bps increase in the policy rate. If my math is correct 40bl yen is about $247ml x 7 = $1.7bl in net profit jump just over that last year as rates moved & more to come for sure!

User Image Komahachi Posted - 4 months ago

$SMFG Keep an eye on BOJ and Japanese bond yields... At last earnings SMFG management team said it gains ¥40 billion (NetProfit) for each increase of 10 basis points in the policy rate. Just the last 5 days 10y rates have gained about 10BPs. Lots of talk in local Japanese press about runaway inflation in Tokyo and likelihood that BOJ needs to be more hawkish on rate calls...ALL GREAT FOR SMFG/MUFG/MFG

$SMFG I took a good position here—as like the nice slow uptrend and the recent news to buy back shares. Also pays small dividend.

User Image Komahachi Posted - 6 months ago

$SMFG Wow... 17 yr highs on SMFG (8316) in Japan overnight as investors react to 1) strong ERNs , 2) increase in dividend 3) aggressive share buyback 4) likelihood BOJ to be more hawkish in the months ahead.. A good long story for sure for not only SMFG but MUFG and MFG as well...

$SMFG Worth noting as BOJ ponders another rate hike! The end of the BOJ’s negative rates policy raised SMFG’s net interest income by ¥40 billion and it will gain another ¥40 billion for each increase of 10 basis points in the policy rate. Mizuho said the end of negative rates added ¥45 billion to its profit.

User Image Komahachi Posted - 6 months ago

$SMFG +3.8% post ERNs....At SMFG, net income surged more than fourfold to 170 billion yen, in the fiscal fourth quarter ended in March. Earnings were helped by strong loan demand, driven by a pickup in corporate client activity. Mizuho’s fourth-quarter net income more than tripled to 36.7 billion yen. “Everything worked favorably for the banking business,” SMFG Chief Executive Toru Nakashima said at a briefing. The end of the BOJ’s negative rates policy raised SMFG’s net interest income by 40 billion yen and it will gain another 40 billion yen for each increase of 10 basis points in the policy rate. Mizuho said the end of negative rates added a net 45 billion yen to its profit. Both MUFG and SMFG plan to buy back about 100 billion yen worth of their own shares. SMFG also plans to raise its dividend by 60 yen to 330 yen per share.

$GGR I had surgery April 22nd and have been off work. Gogoro is about 5% of my total portfolio, but I have great confidence and interest in the company. I had the time to do a lot of research this past week. The new partnership with $SMFG is in the works. From what I can tell, Sumitomo wants to utilize older Gogoro smart batteries for a multitude of secondary uses. A. the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) B. To power street lights? Other Kiosks? C. Recycling unusable batteries Per the news release, this will help Gogoro focus on expansion and improve efficiency. Not sure how Gogoro will realize cash through the partnership. Hopefully details to come. Secondarily, one of the major investors in $SMFG is Berkshire Hathaway. Very legitimate company with many tentacles. I picked up 1000 shares of it after doing some DD. 4.5% dividend to boot.
