$PPG PPG downgraded to In Line from Outperform at Evercore ISI Evercore ISI downgraded PPG Industries to In Line from Outperform with an unchanged price target of $152. The company's Q1 provided a clearer view of some of the headwinds apparent in the portfolio as industrial is seeing pricing give backs and performance end markets largely undershot expectations, the analyst tells investors in a research note. The firm says PPG's headwinds are intensifying and the market is likely to struggle with what multiple to apply to shares in the nearer term.

$PPG PPG price target lowered to $150 from $156 at UBS UBS analyst Joshua Spector lowered the firm's price target on PPG to $150 from $156 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. The company's Q1 earnigns were in line with estimats but the issue in the quarter was that volumes were weaker across essentially all Performance segment end markets which, with lower volume leverage, led to lower margins, the analyst tells investors in a research note. PPG's flat pricing in the quarter was also modestly worse than the 1% increased expected by UBS, the firm states.

$PPG PPG board of directors authorizes $2.5B share repurchase program PPG announced that its board of directors has authorized the repurchase of $2.5 billion of outstanding common stock. The authorization is effective immediately, does not expire, and gives management discretion in determining the conditions under which shares may be purchased. Tim Knavish, PPG chairman and chief executive officer, commented on the quarter: "We achieved year-over-year adjusted EPS growth for the fifth consecutive quarter despite continued challenges in the macro environment. The company benefited from our well-established businesses in Mexico and China, our second and third largest net sales countries, respectively. We also delivered organic sales growth in India and in several long-cycle businesses such as protective and marine coatings and aerospace coatings, where our backlog grew. These gains were mitigated by a large customer load-in and pass-through energy surcharges in Europe that occurred in the prior-year period, lowering year-over-year sales comparisons by approximately 130 basis points. During this year's first quarter, we were also impacted by lower demand in Europe, including an early Easter holiday which reduced the number of selling days in March, and ongoing tepid global demand for industrial coatings."
