Japan’s ministry of Finance intervened in FX markets for the second time in less than two years, aiming to stem a near-relentless depreciation of the Yen against the US Dollar. That weakening became worse following the BoJ's decision last week to dismiss any talk of rate hikes in reaction to Yen volatility. A lack of any further tightening at the BoJ in the near term would likely keep demand for the Yen suppressed relative to currencies associated with higher inflation-adjusted “real” rates. Based on its previous episode of intervention in Autumn 2022, Tokyo may have spent tens of billions of Dollars to stabilize trading in $USDJPY. Though that previous effort was successful in propping up the Yen for some time, the effectiveness of their action was rooted in timing as much as it was in the amount of capital expended, coinciding with a shift in the policy trajectory of the US Fed. $FXY, $DXY, $6J_F Read More: https://www.mcalindenresearchpartners.com/2024/04/29/latest-bandage-over-bleeding-yen-may-lack-the-beneficial-timing-of-previous-intervention/

$COPX $FXY $GLD $SLV $SPY .:: it’s not just good enough to suggest a Keynesian Failure, as where we are now “stagflation”, is not within Keynes’s theory!? And it’s an old theory, with roots back millennia;
Technically … the world blew past Keynes in the 1979’s; and entered Elysium Fields zone where economist theory became “specialized” when it should have taught optimization;
IF AD, aggregate demand actually or doesn’t equal productive capacity (think Yellen’s Chyna’s current surplus), that AD could behave erratically, showing a curved or S-shape line; then those oscillations would effect production, employment, and inflation same; making the ex-ante use of DATA meaningless; and the stance of any CB … treacherous;

$COPX $FXY $GLD $SLV $SPY To all you ‘Buy the dip Stonks never go down crowd’ … you better start watching Bonds and FX because the BOJ is giving you a preview of what the dollar is going to do. At first you think it’s great because stocks go higher and higher (happening now) and then when the clowns in government push too far (passing bills for foreign aid which is an attempt to save the dollar) the currency eventually collapses (coming soon to a theater near you)

Yen at 34-yr lows - when will the BOJ intervene??? Recall the line in the sand was ¥150 & now moving to ¥160-¥170!!! Gap b/n US & Japanese short-term rates is more than +500bps. Recall: Japan spent around $60B intervening in currency markets in Sept & Oct of 2022, when the yen approached the ¥146 & ¥152 levels. Attempts by the BOJ threatening intervention has not worked Note: Depreciated currency reduces purchasing power for households & small businesses. Trade balance worsens & job growth reduces. Depreciated currency is good for exporters. $FXY $UUP $EWJ $EEM
