Japanese data suggests officials may have spent some ¥3.66T ($23.59B) on Wednesday to pull the yen back from near 34-year lows. this is on top of the ¥5.5T spent on Monday On Wed, yen was at around ¥157.55 per dollar when it suddenly spiked, strengthening as far as ¥153 over the next half hour. USD remains up more than +10% against the yen this year, as the market pushes back expectations on the timing of a first Fed rate cut, while the BOJ has signaled it will go slow with further policy tightening after raising rates in March for the first time since 2007. Yen at 34-yr lows - when will the BOJ intervene??? Recall the line in the sand was ¥150 & now moving to ¥160-¥170!!! Gap b/n US & Japanese short-term rates is more than +500bps. Recall: Japan spent around $60B intervening in currency markets in Sept & Oct of 2022, when the yen approached the ¥146 & ¥152 levels. Attempts by the BOJ threatening intervention has not worked Note: Depreciated currency reduces purchasing power for households & small businesses. Trade balance worsens & job growth reduces.
