$VST Janney Montgomery Scott initiates 'undervalued' Vistra with a Buy Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Thomas Meric initiated coverage of merchant independent power producer Vistra with a Buy rating and $82 fair value estimate. The firm thinks Vistra's generation fleet, retail business, and operational flexibility are "currently undervalued" and will become more appreciated as grids become increasingly less reliable and more resource inadequate, the analyst tells investors. Near-term cash flow is well hedged and cash returned to shareholders is "strong," the analyst added.

$CTO I like the preferred offering in principle. The coupon, after original issue discount puts it at an 8% effective yield. Given that their stock is yielding 9%, using the proceeds to buy back shares would be immediately accretive to FCF/share, and even more so for any use with higher ROI. In practice, the outcome will come down to capital allocation decisions following the offering. $VST played a similar hand recently, using preferred at a lower coupon than their cost of common equity and buying back shares voraciously, seems to have worked well for them.
