Cocoa prices last week continued their historical rally after Associations reported higher grinding than expect - no demand destruction due to higher prices/ - National Confectioners Association reported Thursday that North American 1Q24 cocoa grindings rose +9.3% q/q & +3.7 % y/y to 113,683 MT. - Cocoa Association of Asia reported that 1Q24 Asia cocoa grindings rose +5.1% q/q & -0.2% y/y to 221,530 MT. - European Cocoa Association reported that 1Q24 European cocoa grindings rose +4.7% q/q & -2.2% y/y to 367,287 MT ICE-monitored cocoa inventories held in U.S. ports fell to a 3-year low of 4,022,587 bags. Unfavorable growing conditions & crop disease on West African farms over the past year have curbed cocoa production. Global cocoa deficit is expected to extend into 2023/24. Also, cocoa prices are seeing support from the current El Nino weather event after an El Nino event in 2016 caused a drought that fueled a rally in cocoa prices to a 12-year high. $MDLZ $HSY

Cocoa is 1/5th of $HSY cost of goods - cocoa prices have tripled over the last year squeezing margins. Cocoa prices have rallied sharply since the beginning of the year, driven by the worst supply shortage in 40 years. 1Q23 grinding reports are expected this week from Asia, Europe, & NA, and speculation has increased that the reports will show that record-high prices are starting to erode demand In 4Q23 Asia grindings down -8.5% y/y, Europe down -2.55 y/y & NA down -3% y/y Ghana Cocoa Board is negotiating w/ major cocoa traders to postpone delivery of at least 150,000MT to 250,000MT of cocoa until next season due to a lack of beans. Ghana's Cocoa Board said on March 25 that Ghana's 2023/24 cocoa harvest would be only 422,500MT to 425,000MT, half the country's initial f/cast & a 22-year low, as extreme weather & disease decimated crops. Ivory Coast farmers shipped 1.31MMT of cocoa to ports from Oct 1-April 14, down by -30% y/y. US port inventories fell to 3-yr low of 4,025,112 bags

$HSY Hershey price target lowered to $179 from $200 at Piper Sandler Piper Sandler analyst Michael Lavery lowered the firm's price target on Hershey to $179 from $200 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. Cocoa futures continue rising, up 85% for 2025 vs. 2024 levels. Recent management meetings gave the firm a better understanding of its cocoa sourcing. Hershey buys futures contracts and has locked in supply contracts for 2024, but still has exposure for 2025. Piper says Hershey has no pricing actions planned until after mid-year when its ERP transition is complete, and even then, it is also mindful of how much pricing the consumer can bear. The firm trims its numbers to reflect some incremental pressure, but less than it sees in the markets now.
