if it isn’t abundantly clear for everyone, $UMGP pulling their music from tiktok is way more bearish for them than it is for tiktok tiktok is in the content and the algorithm biz and this poses a minor inconvenience. tons of ways to get around this umg is in the client service and the investment biz and, in 2024, this threatens both of those. tiktok is their largest demand generation outlet. they’re framing tiktok as 1% of their revenue. yes, it is 1% of direct revenue but it indirectly represents a tangible portion of their revenue this would be like mtv refusing to play their music videos im the 90s or the equivalent of a major factory coming offline for a physical product it’s possible this is all unsubstantiated negotiating tactics that resolved quickly but if this lasts >1 year, and all else is equal, umg will lose market share before tiktok does
