$ELV $UNH $CNC $CI $MOH Elevance Health downgraded to Neutral from Buy at BofA BofA analyst Kevin Fischbeck downgraded Elevance Health (ELV) to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $530, down from $646. In Q2, both UnitedHealth (UNH) and Elevance signaled incremental Medicaid pressure, notes the analyst, who sees this making it difficult to have conviction about where and when Medicaid margins will trough. Although some premium is warranted for Elevance, there sees the current gap to peers like Centene (CNC), Cigna (CI) and Molina Healthcare (MOH) limiting the upside, the analyst added.

$CI $UNH up massively from the recent sell offs. A properly timed and executed tarde would mint a fortune fomr someone with good trading discipline. I was exited the Cigna calls soon as I reached my break even price as I no longer wanted to handle the election risk. And kept a tiny position on UNH via calls which I exited soon after the 4.5% pop at market open after earnings. Made a decent gain, but no where near the max potential for that trade. Considering that even Humana is up so much from the near 300ish bottom it hit, these are clearly buy and hold names and stable for long term portfolio. Obviously not the best stocks to trade via short term options unless buying leaps.

$UNH $CVS $CI Federal Trade Commission to sue drug middlemen over prices of medications including insulin, source says - CNBC https://ooc.bz/l/37386

User Image Ro_Patel Posted - 2 weeks ago

Rumour: FTC plans to sue the 3 largest PBMs over their negotiating tactics for various medicines, including insulin, that pushed patients toward higher-priced treatments The FTC this week released a scathing report that found the 3 largest PBMs — $CI Express Scripts, $CVS Caremark, & $UNH OptumRx — processed nearly 80% of the roughly 6.6B prescriptions that were dispensed by US pharmacies in 2023. The report found that the prescription drug market is “highly concentrated” b/c the largest PBMs are owned by insurers and, in turn, own specialty, mail-order, or retail pharmacies, which throttles competition. The FTC said its findings were interim, though, b/c some companies did not provide all of the requested information & threatened further action.

FTC suing the PBMs, which is why that interim report was rushed out - as pretext to begin the litigation. https://www.wsj.com/health/pharma/ftc-to-sue-drug-managers-over-insulin-prices-b46af71f $WBA up over 4% while $CVS off a percent. $CI off a half percent & $UNH up over a percent today. There is an ongoing article series in the WSJ https://www.wsj.com/finance/stocks/how-drug-middlemen-keep-beating-the-system-671a638b The “optics are not good and must be addressed,” an executive at a PBM parent organization was quoted as saying in a document obtained by the FTC. “You can get the drug…at a non-preferred pharmacy (Costco) for $97, at Walgreens (preferred) for $9000, and at preferred home delivery for $19,200…Compounding the challenge/optics is the fact that we’ve created plan designs to aggressively steer customers to home delivery where the drug cost is ~200 times higher.” ... In its report, the FTC cites experts who argue that the PBMs may have spun off these rebate aggregators as separate entities to keep more of the savings they create in their pockets instead of passing them on to employers.

$UNH $CI $CVS FTC to sue PBMs over insulin prices, WSJ reports Following a two-year investigation, the Federal Trade Commission plans to file lawsuits against the largest three pharmacy-benefit managers, or PBMs, over their tactics for negotiating prices for drugs including insulin, taking aim at the business practices related to rebates brokered with drug manufacturers, a person familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal's Liz Essley Whyte and Anna Wilde Mathews. The three largest PBMs - UnitedHealth Group's (UNH) OptumRx, Cigna's (CI) Express Scripts and CVS Health's (CVS) Caremark - each share a parent with a large health insurer and handle roughly 80% of U.S. prescriptions, the Journal noted

$CVS $UNH $HUM $CI FTC releases interim staff report on pharmacy benefit managers The Federal Trade Commission announced it has published an interim report on the prescription drug middleman industry that underscores the impact pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, have on the accessibility and affordability of prescription drugs. "The interim staff report, which is part of an ongoing inquiry launched in 2022 by the FTC, details how increasing vertical integration and concentration has enabled the six largest PBMs to manage nearly 95 percent of all prescriptions filled in the United States. This vertically integrated and concentrated market structure has allowed PBMs to profit at the expense of patients and independent pharmacists," the FTC stated. The Commission's interim report stems from special orders the FTC issued in 2022, under Section 6(b) of the FTC Act, to the six largest PBMs-Caremark Rx, LLC; Express Scripts, Inc.; OptumRx, Inc.; Humana Pharmacy Solutions, Inc.; Prime Therapeutics LLC; and MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc. In 2023, the FTC issued additional orders to Zinc Health Services, LLC, Ascent Health Services, LLC, and Emisar Pharma Services LLC, which are each rebate aggregating entities, also known as "group purchasing organizations," that negotiate drug rebates on behalf of PBMs, the FTC noted.
