$LPTH Sam Rubin(CEO) Lightpath : Another reason those systems are complex and large is the need to have optical systems operate across a wide range of temperatures. A common solution is to add an ability to re-focus a camera when surrounding temperature changes. This requires more lenses and motors integrated into the system, so that when temperature changes (think drone at ground level or 10,000 feet up) the motors are used to compensate for the temperature change by moving the lenses. BDNL-4, our new material, has a NEGATIVE thermo-optic coefficient (aka dn/dT). This means that when temperature changes, a lens made of BDNL-4 does the opposite thing then the rest of the lenses do. e.g. it passively compensates for temp changes without needing a motor. BIG DEAL. So big shout out to the team at LightPath Technologies for this achievement. One new glass done, eight more to go 😀

$LPTH Sam Rubin(CEO) Lightpath : This is a pretty big deal. I don't remember when was the last time a new optical material was invented and commercialized. Almost of all the infrared materials used today (ZnSe, ZnS, Ge, Si, BD6) have been around 'forever'. We are not only solving the problem of Germanium supply chain with alternative materials, we are also INNOVATING. Why is this so important? In the world of visible optics, there are hundreds of types of glass. When an optical system (such as the zoom lens in my phone) is designed, the optical designer can optimize the system to be as small as possible by using a perfect combination of glasses. Without that large selection of materials, the zoom lens in my phone would probably be 5-10 times bigger. In the world of infrared (mid wave, long wave, etc.) there are only a handful of materials that can be used as lenses. This results in optical systems that could be smaller, if more materials are available.

BDNL-4 is the newest addition to our family of BlackDiamond infrared materials, and has some very unique properties such as a negative dn/dT! Yes, it can be used to passively a-thermalize optical systems and cancel out the effects of temperature changes on a system. The material is produced in our Orlando facility using the same technology and capacity we have been using for the last ten years to make BD6 glass. A shout out to the inventors of the materials at U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and the people at Defense Logistics Agency that championed and supported the extensive commercialization effort. $LPTH" Glad to see the push in the west to develop a supply chain for Germanium. But, finding the supply of Germanium in the ground is just one part of it. Refining Germanium is a complex process requiring use of strong hydrochloric acids and other environmentally unfriendly processes, which will also need to be done in the west. In the meantime, LightPath Technologies BlackDiamond Infrared materials are a viable alternative for use of Germanium in infrared optics.
